Deepfakes produced by AI are becoming more and more common. Few people in today’s technological world abuse technology and begin to produce false information. Another creation of such cunning brains is Deepfake, which may produce fake photos or videos that appear to be the original work of the target demographic in our culture.

What, though, are deepfakes? How to detect Deepfake images? What effects does this technology have? Can deepfakes be detected? And how can you recognize them?

A deepfake is typically a fake image, video, or story produced by AI neural networks. Deepfake developers mimic the actions and traits of actual people using artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques.  When a video raises issues of national security, determining the legitimacy of the content might become a top priority. With the help of commercial machine-learning tools, low-budget opponents may now produce fake content that is more realistic and expansive thanks to evolutionary advancements in video-generation techniques.

How Does Deepfake Technology Work?

A deepfake is a media file—an image, video, or audio, usually depicting a human subject—that has been deliberately manipulated using deep neural networks (DNNs) to change the identify of a particular individual. The identity of a source subject is often transferred onto that of a destination person in a “faceswap” to represent this transformation.  Such false videos are created using neural network-based technologies in Deepfake. Deep learning, a form of contemporary application of neural net simulation to enormous data sets that aids in training the model to detect the face of a targeted person accurately, is employed in the construction of deepfakes.

Through the use of generative adversarial networks (GANs), which use two machine learning models trained on the data sets to produce false movies while simultaneously identifying them, it takes advantage of human propensity. With the goal of making it appear authentic when viewed normally, the forger ML model persists on creating bogus films until the second model cannot identify the forgery.

Apart from politicians, Deepfake also produces content for the adult market with a focus on well-known celebrities in an effort to generate sensational fake news among the public. To quickly draw internet viewers’ attention and get them to see and share these photographs or videos, they target primarily female personalities. Few people know how to detect Deepfake images.

Can Deepfakes Be Detected?

In April 2018, BuzzFeed used a deepfake video to combine Jordan Peele’s voice with footage of Barack Obama to demonstrate how far the technology had advanced. We’re entering a moment where our opponents can make it seem like anyone is saying anything at any time, Jordan Peele’s portrayal of Obama warns in the video. even if they would never utter those words. It is obvious that deepfake technology is becoming more advanced and harmful. The nature of artificial intelligence has a role in this.

This is not Barack Obama. Are we ready for the wild world of deepfakes?

AI can learn from itself, unlike “traditional” technology, which takes human time and effort to advance. However, AI’s capacity for self-development has pros and cons. It’s fantastic if an AI is developed to carry out positive actions!  However, the threat is unprecedented when an AI is created for anything bad (like deepfakes). Deepfakes are very difficult to distinguish from other types of fake media. Deep-fake speeches, films, and audio samples have the power to do a great deal of harm. Although lawmakers and tech corporations are working on the problem, deepfake-fighting technology is still in its infancy.

Given enough time and enough content, any algorithm, no matter how benign, can become hazardous. According to national security specialist and Stanford University professor Andy Grotto, deepfake AI content “could be video, it could even be audio, and you feed it enough of that content over time the algorithm learns how to mimic that content.”

How Dangerous Are Deepfakes?

Deepfake was primarily developed to target well-known individuals, such as politicians or celebrities. However, it can occasionally become troublesome for that person and his/her workplace when people start to believe in such bogus films and start reacting negatively fervently.

It can be used by opposing parties in politics as a tool to incite false emotions in the populace and influence their support for or opposition to candidates. When people begin to believe in Deepfake and no one can tell if it is real or not, that is when it is the worst. That could seriously harm the victim’s reputation or personality. On the other side, these recordings are utilized to produce phony erotica videotapes that can permanently harm the reputations of well-known celebrities, luring viewers to such materials with ulterior motives. Unless someone points out that it is false, the video goes viral and spreads quickly online via social media and other venues where people are more likely to spend time watching such things.

Deepfake videos are, regrettably, only one aspect of this tragedy. Deepfake AI can now create material that imitates the tone and mannerisms of certain persons. And none other than Elon Musk and Sam Altman’s OpenAI business is the source of this technology. This technology from OpenAI uses AI to generate natural language, as opposed to a firm like Lexalytics, an InMoment company, which uses AI to analyze natural language.

Of course, Musk and company don’t refer to their AI author as a “deepfake creator” or anything similar. In fact, OpenAI claims they won’t make their text-generating AI available to the general public due to the potential for abuse. Furthermore, Musk has always expressed concern about the risks posed by AI.

Process to Detect AI Deepfake Images or Videos?

Many people wonder if.. can deepfakes be detected? Deepfake can occasionally become both challenging and impossible for average people to recognize. Similar technology is required to identify the fakeness of the image or video and alert the audience, as AI technology is utilized to produce these types of false videos.

Search for Image Flaws

The first thing to look for while viewing a deepfake is any distortion or unusual movement in the video. Since deepfake technology is still developing, there may still be visible image blurring or imperfections. Additionally, the video is probably a deepfake if it has been sped up or slowed down. Find related pictures or videos of the person and contrast them; many of them are using an image as a starting point for a new video or a source video that is already online.  Examine the image or video for any irregularities, such as out-of-character motions or facial expressions, as well as any haziness around the edges.

A few main things to watch for:

  • Forehead height, width of face
  • Eye direction
  • Ear placement
  • Expression at moments

Pay Attention to Strange Speech

Though not flawless, deepfake technology can produce convincing audio. Pay particular attention to the speech for any forced pauses or inflections as well as for speech that lacks emotion or variety. When compared, the abrupt patterns of a deepfake should be easy to distinguish from the actual flow of speech, but as the learning engine improves, this will become more challenging.

Stop the Video.

Try pausing the video and looking for anything that pops out because it’s frequently lot simpler to spot things that aren’t quite right in still frames. Check your ears, hairline, and jaw for any small variations that become more noticeable when you pause.

Verify the Source

The source of the article is frequently a dead giveaway as to whether it is a deepfake or not. It’s likely that the source is not what it claims to be if it’s unreliable or obscure. Additionally, it’s probably phony or at least a manufactured piece if the person is acting obviously out of character or against their “usual” ethics and culture.

This approach isn’t always trustworthy; in the age of unverified news sources and the haste to report breaking stories, it’s very conceivable that deepfakes will spread even among credible news organizations before the truth is discovered and a retraction is published.

Be Cautious Before Sharing.

Always be skeptical of what you see on TV or online! The saying “The camera never lies” was formerly popular, but in many ways, it no longer holds true today. Think twice before sharing or believing a video if it appears out of place, such as a politician speaking out of context or against the nation’s interests, an actor acting in ways that wouldn’t be consistent with their brand, or something that seems impossible to believe. Look at the video’s source, the surrounding information, and the Deepfake warning indicators.

Technology and Regulatory Counters to Deepfakes

To identify discrepancies and flag potential deepfakes for manual review, researchers want to integrate natural language processing, sophisticated image processing, and audio analysis. Before these technologies can be deemed suitable for production, they must overcome enormous obstacles. However, private businesses (as well as the DoD) continue to spend a lot of money.

Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), a division of the Department of Defense, unveiled its “AI Next” $2 billion initiative in September 2018. Dr. Steven Walker, the agency’s head, says they “want to explore how machines can acquire human-like communication and thinking capabilities, with the ability to detect novel circumstances and surroundings and adapt to them.” The program called Media Forensics (MediFor) is one of these initiatives.  MediFor will automatically identify manipulations and provide comprehensive information about how the manipulations were carried out. SRI International, a nonprofit organization, received contracts from DARPA to create a next-generation AI system.

Summary

Misinformation has been conveyed using a new method that produces deep false graphics and videos. As this technology develops, it will be crucial for everyone in business and politics to take precautions to protect themselves from disinformation efforts. Deep fakes can be produced or found using tools like GAN models. Now that you know how to detect Deepfake images, you can be careful. These techniques can aid in preventing the online dissemination of incorrect information that might damage a company’s reputation or mislead customers about commercially available goods. We advise all businesses to start utilizing these strategies so their operations can continue without being jeopardized.
